In Belgium
Mediation (mediation / bemiddeling) is a structured process where a certified mediator helps disputing parties reach a mutually acceptable agreement. The mediator must be certified by the Federal Mediation Commission. Cost: typically 100-200 EUR/hour, shared.
How it works
Confidentiality. Nothing said during mediation can be used in court if mediation fails.
Agreement. If reached, it can be homologated by the court, giving it enforceable force.
Practical example
A landlord and tenant dispute 5,000 EUR in water damage. After 2 mediation sessions (450 EUR shared), they agree on 2,800 EUR compensation. The agreement is homologated by the justice of the peace.
