Not legally, but most leases require it. The tenant is liable for damage caused by fire unless they prove force majeure. Tenant liability insurance is therefore strongly recommended.

The landlord's insurance covers the building (walls, roof). The tenant's insurance covers their liability (damage they cause to the property), their contents and neighbour recourse.

1. Secure the premises and call emergency services if necessary. 2. Notify the landlord immediately. 3. Report the claim to your insurance within 48 hours (8 days for theft). 4. Keep evidence (photos, invoices).
