The rent receipt is a tenant’s right. On simple request, the landlord must issue a document confirming that rent was paid for the relevant period. This is free of charge.

With the widespread use of bank transfers, paper receipts are less common. Bank statements showing the structured rent reference serve as proof of payment. However, receipts remain useful for: rental candidacy files, CPAS declarations, court proceedings.

Good to know
The tenant can request receipts for previous months. The landlord cannot refuse, even for rent paid several years ago, within the limitation period.

Practical example

David rents in Molenbeek. His landlord uses software that automatically generates a PDF receipt sent by email on the payment day. When David applies for social housing, he provides the last 12 receipts as proof of regular rent payment.
