Social housing aid through PCSW in Belgium
Social housing aid through PCSW: conditions, procedure and support measures.
Role of the PCSW in housing aid
The PCSW (Public Centre for Social Welfare) is the municipal body responsible for guaranteeing human dignity. The right to housing is one of its core missions.
Main missions
| Mission | Detail |
|---|---|
| Financial aid | Rent supplement, rental deposit |
| Support | Housing search, mediation |
| Guidance | Towards social housing, regional aid |
| Emergency | Emergency shelter, rehousing |
Every Belgian municipality has a PCSW. The aid available varies depending on the PCSW’s resources and the applicant’s situation. For regional aid, see our guide on housing aid.
Types of aid available
Rent supplement
The PCSW can supplement the applicant’s income to enable them to pay their rent. The amount depends on the difference between the household’s resources and the cost of housing.
Rental deposit
The PCSW can set up the rental deposit for people who cannot fund it themselves. It can also act as guarantor to the landlord.
Moving assistance
Partial or full coverage of moving costs for people in difficulty.
Mediation
The PCSW can intervene as a mediator between the tenant and the landlord in case of conflict or risk of eviction.
Transitional lease
The PCSW can sign a transitional lease on behalf of a beneficiary in difficulty.
