Discrimination and remedies

Protected criteria

Belgian law prohibits discrimination in access to housing on the basis of:

  • Ethnic origin or nationality
  • Disability or health status
  • Sexual orientation
  • Religion or beliefs
  • Age, sex, marital status
  • Financial situation (replacement income)

In case of discrimination

  1. Document the facts (listing, written exchanges)
  2. Report to the Interfederal Centre for Equal Opportunities (Unia)
  3. File a complaint with the police
  4. The judge can order the landlord to pay damages
